Will I need care from other health professionals during Chiropractic Treatment?

That all depends. Sometimes, depending on what the problem is or what the severity of the problem is:

• We’ll need to maybe do some physical therapy, or
• We’ll have to do some different exercises.

We do some in the office, but if it’s more extensive, we’ll refer you out to a physical therapist. Massage therapy is another great modality to use along with chiropractic. Again, if it’s something that I can’t handle, I’ll let you know, and we’ll refer you out for further care with other professionals.

Why do Chiropractors take X-rays?

Taking an x-ray is very important because it gives me the ability to see inside the body. There are things that happen that you might not even feel, so you can never go off of symptoms and what symptoms are causing. So you can’t say, “Oh, I’ve got a back problem because my back hurts.”

A lot of times things will happen without any sort of symptoms at all. If you look at these two different bone types, we have a normal spine without any sort of bone spurring going on. And if you look at this one, we’ve got bone spurs, a lot of different lipping going on, on the edges. I could never feel, with my hands, the bone spurs. You have to have an x-ray to see the bone spurs, and it’s important to catch things before they cause symptoms.

So if we can take an x-ray, we know what is going on in the body. Before it actually happens, we can take care of things before they become a serious problem.

When did Chiropractic Care start?

Chiropractic started back in the late 1800’s. There was no osteopathy. What happened was, chiropractors, at one point, wanted to join the ranks of the medical doctors, where they prescribe medicine. That’s that big difference between a chiropractor and a medical doctor, is we don’t prescribe medication.

We believe that the body can take care of itself without any help. There were chiropractors that wanted to prescribe medications and so they actually broke off and started their own school of medicine, where originally it was stated where they first and foremost adjusted and then they had medication on the side. It’s kind of moved to the point to where now, it’s mostly medication, and then they might adjust here or there.

What should I look for when choosing a Chiropractor?

The things that you should look for when you’re looking for a good chiropractor: Look for somebody who cares.

I know it sounds simple, but somebody who actually listens to you and your problems, and doesn’t just put you in a box. It’s so easy, when you’re treating patients, to say, “Oh, you’ve a headache, so we’re going to treat you this way” or “You’ve a low back pain, we’re going to treat you this way.”

• You need to look at the entire person. So make sure that when you’re looking for someone, they’re looking at the entire package, as opposed to just a specific area.
• Also, you want to find somebody that does the complete job. It’s easy to get scared as a chiropractor and look and say, “Well, what if they don’t accept this care plan or that care plan” and only tell you half the truth.
• You need to know the entire story and know what’s really going to help you in the long run, which goes into the next part.
• You want somebody that’s going to be there for the long haul, not just somebody that’s going to crack you and send you home.
• You need to know what’s going on in your body and you need to get it taken care of.

What Chiropractic Techniques do you use?

Here in the office, we use the Pro-Adjuster which is a computerized instrument that helps me to see problems in the spine and see how the spine is actually moving and working. We also use Palmer Package which is what I learned from Palmer College of Chiropractic, which is the chiropractic school I went to.

In that, we use diversified which is a manual adjusting technique, we use Thompson Drop which is where we use the table to assist us in the adjusting. Then, I also use a pain neutralization technique which is more of a muscle therapy that helps to block pain.

What Causes my Back to Crack?

The popping sound within the joint is actually just gases being released from the joint capsule itself. So it’s like when you crack your knuckles, all you’re doing is you are just separating that joint just enough to allow gas to be released from that joint. When that gas releases, it makes that popping sound.

So as we push on the back, all we’re doing is separating these joints just a little bit to allow these gases to escape.

Should pregnant women get Chiropractic Care?

It is recommended to see a chiropractor when you are pregnant. When you’re pregnant, things happen in your body as you probably already know if you are pregnant where the ligaments start to loosen up. So things become a lot more loose and so injuries can happen easier when you’re pregnant.

So what chiropractic does is just a regular check up making sure that the bones are in the proper position with this ligament laxity.
